The National Climatic Data Center reports that Phoenix experiences more sunshine than any other major metropolitan area in the country. It receives sunshine 85 percent of the year.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
During the early 1860s, the Salt River was used as the riverbed for the settlement that later became Phoenix.
In legend, Phoenix gets its name from one of the city's first settlers: Cambridge-educated pioneer Darrell Duppa predicted a great city would rise from ancient Hohokam ruins like the legendary phoenix bird.
There are 22 sovereign American Indian tribes living in Arizona.
In the earliest days of Phoenix, the Hohokam Indians inhabited the city. There is no record of the Hohokam tribe after 1450 A.D., although they are believed to be the ancestors of the Pima tribe. Those who have gone are called hohokam in the Pima language.
The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors formed Phoenix's first election precinct on May 4, 1868.
On Feb. 14, 1912, Arizona became a state, and George W. P. Hunt became its first governor.
