Papago Park
Do you want to enjoy great outdoor recreation just minutes from downtown and the airport? There are many things to do in Papago Park, including a hike around the red butte formations, fishing in the seven acres of lagoons, playing golf at Papago Golf Course, and visiting the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden nearby.
Phoenix history has been represented by Papago Park: it was a reservation for indigenous tribes, a fish hatchery in the Great Depression, a POW camp during WWII, and a VA hospital. There are lanes for baseball and softball, a baseball field, a lake, and Sonoran Desert plants and animals in the park today, as well as the Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Garden, golf courses, museums, and even a baseball field.

TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS TRAIL MAP
As a result, Papago Park provides easy access to walking, hiking, mountain biking, and trail running on smooth, flat trails with little elevation gain. It is divided between the east and west sides by Galvin Parkway.
WEST SIDE TRAILS
There are accessible, paved paths along with trails and loops around Big Butte and Small Butte. The 23-mile Double Butte Loop offers a full view of the park. No restrooms are available in Papago Park Drive parking lot. It has a drinking fountain, bike rack, and picnic ramada.
Trails are open until 11 p.m., although gated roadways and parking areas are open until sunset.
EAST SIDE TRAILS
The park has a number of trails, including an interpretive nature trail to learn about Sonoran Desert plants and animals, and a short hike within Hole-in-the-Rock, one of Phoenix's best scenic viewpoints. This side has restrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic ramadas.
Parks and highways are open 6am-7pm, but trails stay open until 11pm.
HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK TRAIL
User yuanbinyu posted this photo with the caption: Tighten up on your reins. Your horses are running wild.
The formation on the east side of the park offers great views of nearby lagoons and the distant downtown skyline (especially at sunset). In only a 1/10 mile, the chamber can be reached by climbing 200 feet on steps. In the ancient Hohokam civilization, a hole in the rock ceiling was used to track the sun's position.
Distance: 03 miles
A trailhead is located on 625 N. Galvin Parkway in Phoenix. You will be directed to the formation from the parking lot. You can also walk to other parking lots if parking is unavailable.
Expect crowds, spectacular views of downtown Phoenix and Tempe, and incredible sandstone formations. A dog is permitted on the trail.
GOVERNOR HUNT'S TOMB
An alternate perspective of Hunt's Tomb from the one I shared last month, taken by user zachcooleyphoto. My story includes a post about that Arizona governor entombed there and its fascinating history. I wish everyone an awesome weekend!
George W.P. Hunt's tomb is visible throughout the park, standing tall on a hill in honor of Arizona's first governor. The tomb was built in 1931 for Hunt's wife, and he was buried there after his death in 1934. Other members of the family are also interred there. You can see Hole-in-the-Rock and the Phoenix Zoo inside the Phoenix Zoo if you walk to the top.

Desert Botanical Garden
Though I was able to find so much closure, so many wounds remain open.
It is at least a lesson that, despite all of the dark and cruelty in life, there can still be some light and beauty in the middle.
Hope exists and will always exist.

My favorite part of Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden! I could stay there all weekend! There are over 5,000 types of cactus, trees, and flowers at DBGPHQ! The desert isn't just dirt and tumbleweeds
The Desert Botanical Garden's annual Las Noches de las Luminarias are the perfect getaway for Arizona residents this winter! The tradition will take place throughout the month of December. The desert trails will be lit with thousands of lights and candles and Christmas music will be played

Submitted by raemstaylor, caption reads: Today is my 29th birthday. There is no doubt that I have not just lived my life, but I have basked in it as well. My mistakes didn't just teach me something; they taught me how to improve. Not only did I grow, but I evolved as well. As I fulfill God's purpose for my life, may I be a blessing to others and have fun as I do so
After a long time away from my last road trip, I was eager to visit my neighbor to the east, Arizona. From San Diego to downtown Phoenix, we drove in just 7 hours (with breaks).
Visit the top attractions within the park boundaries to make it an enjoyable day. Check out the Sonoran Desert's vast variety of plants at the Desert Botanical Garden; visit all sorts of animals at the Phoenix Zoo; learn more about the state's history at the Arizona Heritage Center; tee off at the Papago Golf Club; or enjoy some family fun at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting.
