Our favorite thing about 2020 was the conscious effort to support small businesses.

Especially for Black business owners, last year was a challenging one. For visitors and locals, we've curated a list of Black-owned fashion businesses to add to your shopping list.

We have compiled a list of local shops in Phoenix and online shops that specialize in everything from sustainable clothing to African-inspired jewelry.

 

Archwood Exchange

 

The Buy Black Marketplace is organized and hosted by Archwood Exchange, dubbed a hub for Black business in Phoenix. Business can sell their products in a brick-and-mortar environment without high overhead costs thanks to its cooperative-inspired design. Besides fashion and accessories, the store also offers an online shop with graphic T-shirts and straw hats. Black Russian Label

 

Designer Joanna deShay, whose father is Nigerian and mother is Russian, draws inspiration from her diverse heritage for Black Russian Label. A variety of active women inspire the ready-to-wear line. Fashion garments must be fitted and textured with the goal of empowering women to dress according to their moods. It offers two collections: Urban Nomad, with interchangeable pieces in vivid pinks, earthy greens, and leopard prints, and Global Trekker, which is inspired by styles from India, Africa, Russia, Asia, and Europe. There are an array of styles to choose from in these collections, including floral mini dresses, animal prints, cropped jodhpurs, and asymmetrical skirts.

 

Merryn Omotayo Alaka

 

The jewelry line of Nigerian-American multimedia artist Merryn Omotayo Alakas is inspired by West African textiles and women's rights. In her work, she describes the relationship between cultural materials, ancestry, and objects as an inspiration. The Mama Benz Collection, which combines cuticle rings with brass and sterling silver, clearly reflects a pop culture influence.

 

Sammie & Dannie

 

A vintage clothing and accessories boutique was founded by Kisha Harper, inspired by her two daughters Sam and Dana. Founded from sisterhood, it is driven by the mission of giving back to the community and motivating, empowering and inspiring people. It is Harper's family's passion for sustainability that inspired her to share vintage treasures. An online shop for this Midtown Phoenix boutique is also available, which offers an eclectic mix of findings, including a gown and pump set from Escada, a necklace and bracelet set from Givenchy, and a contemporary bag from Fendi.

Straw and Wool

 

Straw and Wool is a family-owned and operated hat boutique, designed to meet the demands of today's stylish man. The shop on Roosevelt Row Arts District offers an array of hat styles from Panamas to fedoras, some of them embellished with feathers and ribbon. Sizes range from small to XXL, and colors range from red scarlet and blue cobalt to yellow mustard and black classic.
